# eSSL eTimeTrackLite for gyms: what it does and what it misses

Smaran Challapalli · Published 28 Aug 2026 · Updated 2 Nov 2026

eSSL eTimeTrackLite is the time and attendance software that eSSL supplies for its biometric devices. Many gyms meet it because the reseller installs it with the machine. It records punches well, but it was built for offices, so it does not track membership fees or expiry. This post explains the gap and the export you need.

## What eTimeTrackLite is

On eSSL's own [eTimeTrackLite page](https://esslsecurity.com/etimetracklite-web-integration), checked 2 Nov 2026, it is described as "an enterprise grade web based software" for time and attendance. The page lists:

- centralised device data push, and master and slave device management
- shift scheduling with grace periods and breaks
- leave management with quota reports
- attendance reports, audit reports and SMS notifications for punch records
- an employee self-service portal, a mobile app and geo-fencing for mobile punches
- user block and unblock, and remote finger and face enrolment

The page says it can run on a Windows web server with MS-SQL or Oracle. Price: not published on that page. The [eSSL X990 page](https://esslsecurity.com/fingerprint/x990) lists eTimeTrackLite as software for that device, in desktop and web versions.

## What a gym uses it for

Used in a gym, it does three jobs.

1. **Collects punches** from the device so staff do not read them off a screen.
2. **Keeps the user list**, with ID and name, in one place.
3. **Gives a daily log** of who came in, which a front desk can filter by date.

For a small gym with a fixed staff, that may be all that is asked of it.

## Where it falls short for a gym

eSSL describes shifts, leave and payroll-style features. The page does not mention membership plans, fees due, renewals, freezes or expiry. For a gym those are the main questions at the desk.

- **Fees due.** A punch tells you someone came in. It does not tell you that their plan ended last Tuesday. You still need a separate register or software for dues.
- **Expiry and the door.** The page lists user block and unblock, so a user can be blocked by hand or through its API. Something still has to decide who is blocked and when. Keep your own expiry list and compare it against the user list.
- **Two lists to keep in step.** Members live in your billing sheet and again in the attendance software. A new member added to one and not the other is the usual cause of "he came but is not in the report".
- **Office vocabulary.** Shifts, overtime and leave do not map neatly to members and trainers. Trainers' working hours fit better than members' visits.

Where fee and attendance data are joined, a front desk can see on one screen that a member came in and is overdue. That is the reason to read our [guide to gym biometric attendance](/guides/gym-biometric-attendance/) before choosing between a plain attendance tool and gym software.

## What to export before you switch

If you are leaving eTimeTrackLite, or the device vendor's software, do this first. Do not delete anything until you have checked the files open.

1. **The user list**: user ID, name, card number if any, and which fingers are enrolled. The page lists bulk import and export of employee details via Excel.
2. **All punches**, with the user ID and the exact date and time. The page says logs can be exported in custom formats such as dat, xls, csv and txt. The page also lists export to MySQL, MSSQL or Oracle databases and FTP upload.
3. **Device settings**: IP address, device number, admin password, time and date settings.
4. **A copy of the device's own log** by USB, if the device offers it, as a second source.
5. **The user ID sheet**, matched to your membership record. Keep user IDs the same in the new system. If they change, old punches stop matching the right member.

Open one exported file and check three random punches against what you remember. Then keep a dated copy somewhere safe. The [switching guide](/guides/switch-gym-software/) covers the rest of the move.

Fingerprint templates are personal data. Leave them on the device. Do not export them to spreadsheets or share them in chat.

## Is it right for your gym

If you only need to know who came in, and the same person tracks dues separately, it may be enough. If you want expiry, dues and attendance together, you will want gym software. Compare devices in our [list of biometric machines](/blog/best-biometric-attendance-machine-gym/), brands in [eSSL vs ZKTeco](/blog/essl-vs-zkteco-gym/), and one model in [the eSSL X990 in a gym](/blog/essl-x990-gym/).

## Where Helmr fits

Helmr, gym management software for India, is being built to connect ESSL and ZKTeco devices through a bridge. Templates stay on the device, QR check-in is always an alternative, and Helmr is in early access. ## Frequently asked questions

### What is eTimeTrackLite?

It is eSSL's time and attendance software for its biometric devices, in desktop and web versions. eSSL's page describes shifts, leave, reports and device management, built for offices.

### Can eTimeTrackLite track gym fees and expiry?

eSSL's page does not mention membership plans, fees or expiry. A gym needs a separate record for those, or gym software that joins them to attendance.

### How do I export punches from eTimeTrackLite?

eSSL's page says logs can be exported in custom formats such as dat, xls, csv and txt, and to MySQL, MSSQL or Oracle databases. Export the user list and punches before you change anything.

### Why keep the same user IDs when I switch?

Punches are stored against the user ID. A new ID scheme breaks the link between old punches and members.
