# Gym franchise in India: what the brands publish about cost

Smaran Challapalli · Published 21 Sep 2026 · Updated 2 Nov 2026

Gym franchise costs in India are rarely published in full. Brands give a headline investment, sometimes a monthly fee, and leave the rest to a sales call. This post lists only what a franchisor states on its own page, marks the rest as not published, and gives you questions to ask.

## How this post was written

I run a personal-training studio in Hyderabad, and owners often ask whether to franchise a brand or build their own. Directory sites and blogs quote many numbers, and they often disagree. Here, a figure appears only if it was read on the brand's own page on the date shown. Anything else is marked "not published". I checked one brand in detail, so this is not a market survey.

## What one brand publishes: Anytime Fitness India

The India franchise page of Anytime Fitness gives these figures (read on [franchise.anytimefitness.co.in](https://franchise.anytimefitness.co.in/), checked 2 Nov 2026):

| Item | What the page states (checked 2 Nov 2026) |
|---|---|
| Total initial investment | Headline of ₹3 Cr - ₹3.5 Cr |
| Initial gym franchise cost, in the FAQ | Approximately 2.5-3 crores |
| Ongoing payment | Approx. 1.5 lakh a month, described as a fixed monthly low royalty fee |
| Additional clubs | A discount on the initial franchise fee for each additional club |
| One-time franchise fee on its own | Not published on that page |

Notice that the page itself uses two different ranges for the investment: the headline covers total initial investment and the FAQ covers the initial franchise cost. Ask the brand which figure includes what.

Other brands: I did not find a fee table I could confirm on their own pages, so their figures are not published here. If a directory lists a number for a brand, treat it as a lead for your question list, not as a price.

## What "not published" usually hides

Even where a headline exists, these lines tend to need a direct answer:

- One-time franchise fee, separate from the fit-out and equipment.
- Whether equipment must be bought from the brand's suppliers.
- Royalty basis: fixed monthly, or a share of sales.
- Marketing or brand fund contributions.
- Software or technology fees.
- Term, renewal charges and exit terms.
- Territory: whether the brand can open next to you.
- Who pays for refurbishment when the brand changes its look.

A fixed monthly royalty and a percentage of sales behave differently. A fixed fee is the same in a slow month. A percentage grows with your sales. Ask which applies, in writing.

## A worksheet for your own comparison

Fill this in for each brand you consider. Every cell should come from a document the brand gives you.

| Line | Brand A | Brand B | Own brand |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-time franchise fee | | | not applicable |
| Fit-out and equipment | | | |
| Deposit and rent | | | |
| Monthly royalty or fee | | | |
| Marketing fund | | | |
| Software and other mandatory fees | | | |
| Months of losses to fund | | | |
| Term and exit terms | | | |

Leave blank anything the brand has not given you in writing. A blank cell is the answer to your next question.

## Franchise or your own second branch?

Franchising gives you a known name and a system. You pay for it every month, whatever the footfall. Building your own branch costs you the design and the learning, and you keep the margin. Some owners start with one franchise unit to learn how a chain runs, then build their own. Others do the opposite. Neither is right for everyone. It comes down to capital, how fast you want to move and how much control you want. If you take the own-branch route, read [opening a second gym branch](/blog/open-second-gym-branch/), and the wider [multi-branch gym guide](/guides/multi-branch-gym/).

## Questions to ask before you sign

1. What is the total I will have spent when the doors open, line by line?
2. What is paid monthly, to whom, and does it change with my sales?
3. Which purchases must come from you or your approved suppliers?
4. What do franchisees' monthly numbers look like? Ask for the franchise disclosure document or equivalent, and speak to existing owners without the brand's staff present.
5. What happens if I want to leave or sell?
6. Is there any software I must use, and what does it cost?

Take the draft agreement to a lawyer before you pay any token amount.

## Where Helmr fits

If you run several branches under your own brand, Helmr, gym management software for India, is being built for that: business, brand and branch levels, a GSTIN and payment account per branch. It is in early access. Pricing will be per business plus a per-branch add-on, published before launch. Helmr takes 0% of member payments.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much does a gym franchise cost in India?

It depends on the brand. One brand, Anytime Fitness India, states total initial investment of ₹3 Cr - ₹3.5 Cr on its franchise page (checked 2 Nov 2026). Other brands' figures were not published on pages I could confirm.

### Is the royalty a percentage of sales?

It depends on the brand. Anytime Fitness India describes a fixed monthly royalty on its page. Ask every brand in writing.

### Are directory figures reliable?

Treat them as leads. They often disagree with each other and with the brand's own page. Ask the brand for a line-by-line statement.

### Is a franchise better than opening my own branch?

Neither is better for everyone. A franchise costs a monthly payment but gives a known system. Your own branch keeps margin and control and needs more of your time.
