# Opening a second gym branch: what to settle first

Smaran Challapalli · Published 16 Sep 2026 · Updated 2 Nov 2026

Opening a second gym branch is the point where a gym stops being a place and becomes a business. The first branch ran on your presence. The second needs rules, because you cannot be in both rooms. This checklist covers what to settle before you sign the lease.

## First, ask whether branch one is ready

A second branch multiplies whatever the first one is. If renewals are chaotic at branch one, they will be chaotic twice. Check these before you spend on a lease:

- Can you say last month's joinings, renewals and collections without asking anyone?
- Does the branch run for a week without you on the floor?
- Is there a person you trust who could manage it?

If the answer to any is no, fix that first. A second location is not a cure for the first.

## GSTIN: same state or new state

GST registration follows the state. The GST Council's registration flyer says a PAN-based entity has one GSTIN per State, and that a person with multiple places of business in one State may be granted a separate registration for each ([GST Council flyer, PDF](https://www.gstcouncil.gov.in/sites/default/files/e-version-gst-flyers/Registration_under_GST_Law_new.pdf), checked 2 Nov 2026). The flyer is old, so check the current position.

- **Same state:** talk to your CA about adding the new address to your existing registration, or taking a separate one.
- **Different state:** you need a new registration in that state before you bill anyone there.

Do this before pre-sales, not after. A pre-sale receipt from the wrong GSTIN is hard to undo. The full picture is in the [multi-branch gym guide](/guides/multi-branch-gym/).

## Staff: who goes, who stays, who is new

You cannot clone your best trainer. Decide this early:

| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Who is the branch manager? | One name, with authority over the desk and the till |
| Which trainers move, which are hired? | Moving your best trainer weakens branch one |
| Who opens and closes? | Keys and cash need a named person |
| How are PT sessions and commission tracked per branch? | See [PT commission per session](/blog/pt-commission-per-session-example/) |

Write a one-page job description for the manager. Include what they can approve alone, such as a freeze request, and what comes to you, such as a discount beyond the rate card.

## Pricing: same card, or a reason

Members will compare. Start with the same rate card at both branches. Change it only for a clear reason, such as a different locality, and write the reason down. Decide whether a membership works at both branches, and what happens to the revenue if a member trains away from the branch where they joined. The method for the numbers is in [gym membership pricing](/guides/gym-membership-pricing-india/).

## Opening cost: use a worksheet, not a guess

Costs vary by city, size and fit-out. This post does not quote a figure. Make a worksheet with your own quotes:

| Line | Your quote | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit and first months' rent | | Landlord |
| Fit-out and interiors | | Contractor |
| Equipment | | Supplier quotes (two at least) |
| Licences and registrations | | Local authority, CA |
| Pre-launch marketing | | Your plan |
| Working capital for 3 to 6 months of losses | | Your plan |

The last line is the one owners skip. A new branch usually takes time to fill, so plan cash for the gap. For a fuller method, see [cost of opening a gym in India](/guides/cost-of-opening-a-gym-india/).

## Members and records: one database from day one

A member who joins at either branch should be one record. Use phone number as the key and search before you add. Decide how a new branch's enquiries are separated from branch one's, so you can measure each location. Tag every lead and every payment with a branch from the first day. Retrofitting this later is painful.

## The first 90 days

- **Weeks 1 to 4:** pre-sales, staff training, a soft opening with a small group.
- **Weeks 5 to 8:** daily look at joinings and collections. Call every member who has not returned after one visit.
- **Weeks 9 to 12:** compare the new branch against your own targets, written before opening. Decide what to change, not whether to panic.

Review it weekly with the manager, using the same short report for both branches.

## Where Helmr fits

Helmr, gym management software for India, is being built so that a second branch is an addition, not a new setup: business, brand and branch levels, a GSTIN and payment account per branch, and staff limited to their branch. It is in early access. Pricing will be per business plus a per-branch add-on, published before launch. Helmr takes 0% of member payments. Migration is planned as free, assisted and included.

## Frequently asked questions

### When is a gym ready for a second branch?

When branch one runs for a week without you, its numbers are clear to you at any time, and a trusted manager is available. If not, fix those first.

### Do I need a new GST registration for a second branch?

If it is in another state, yes. If in the same state, ask your CA whether to add it to the existing registration or register separately. Do it before you take payments.

### Should both branches share one membership?

Only if you decide so and write it on the plan. Many gyms sell a single-branch plan and a separate all-branch plan. Decide how revenue is credited.

### How much does a second gym branch cost?

It depends on city, size and fit-out, so no single figure is useful. Build a worksheet from your own quotes and include working capital for the months the branch is filling.
