Cost of opening a gym in India: a worksheet by gym size
In short
The cost of opening a gym in India is the sum of eight lines: space and deposit, interiors, equipment, licences, software, staff, marketing and working capital. This guide gives you those lines as a worksheet for three gym sizes, with sourced equipment prices and a runway rule, and leaves your own quotes to fill.
#Why this guide has few numbers
Most "gym setup cost" pages give one range per size and no source. Calculators do the same: pick a city tier, a gym type and an area, and get a low-to-high total. MyGymDesk's opening-cost calculator uses the same six cost categories, and calls its own output "illustrative planning assumptions" (checked 2 Nov 2026).
A range for a whole city says little about your lease, your landlord or your equipment list. So here, a rupee figure appears only where a vendor published it on its own page, with the date I read it. Everywhere else you get a formula and an empty cell. Your quotes beat any average.
I run a personal-training studio in Hyderabad. The lines below are the ones I had to budget for, in the order the money leaves your account.
#The three sizes
Pick the column that matches your plan. Put your floor area in square feet in the first row.
| Size | What it means here |
|---|---|
| Small studio | Personal-training or boutique studio, a handful of stations, one or two staff on the floor |
| Mid-size gym | Cardio, strength and a free-weights area, a front desk, several trainers |
| Large gym | Multiple floors or zones, changing rooms, a full trainer team, a sales desk |
#Worksheet: the eight cost lines
Copy this table into a sheet. Each cell is a formula or a blank for you. No rupee figure here is a market average.
| Cost line | Formula | Small studio | Mid-size gym | Large gym |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Floor area (sq ft) | measured on the lease | ____ | ____ | ____ |
| Space and deposit | deposit months x rent per month, plus brokerage if any | ____ | ____ | ____ |
| Interiors | area x fit-out quote per sq ft, plus flooring, mirrors, AC, lighting | ____ | ____ | ____ |
| Equipment | sum of (quantity x quoted unit price), see next section | ____ | ____ | ____ |
| Licences | sum of the fees your city and state ask for (list below) | ____ | ____ | ____ |
| Software | set-up fee + yearly fee, if any (see software section) | ____ | ____ | ____ |
| Staff before opening | staff count x monthly salary x months before the first member pays | ____ | ____ | ____ |
| Pre-launch marketing | creative + paid budget + signage quote | ____ | ____ | ____ |
| Working capital | fixed monthly cost x runway months (see runway rule) | ____ | ____ | ____ |
| Total to raise | add the eight cost rows above (not floor area) | ____ | ____ | ____ |
Rent is the line that moves most between cities and streets. Read your lease for the lock-in period, the escalation clause and how many months of deposit the landlord wants, before you trust any total.
#Equipment: real prices from vendor pages
Equipment is usually the biggest single line, and the one where published prices exist. These are listed prices from Indian vendors' own pages, not quotes for your order. Delivery, GST, installation and negotiation are extra or may change them, so treat them as a floor for the conversation, not a budget.
| Product (vendor page) | Listed price, checked 2 Nov 2026 |
|---|---|
| Commercial treadmill, Fitness Solution, Pune | ₹1,25,000 per piece |
| Light commercial treadmill, same page | ₹75,000 per piece |
| Spinning bike, same page | ₹35,000 per piece |
| Rowing machine, same page | ₹48,000 per piece |
| Squat rack, same page | ₹55,000 per piece |
| Olympic flat bench, same page | ₹38,000 per piece |
| Multi-adjustable bench, same page | ₹28,000 per piece |
| Functional trainer, same page | ₹1,15,000 per piece |
| Multi gym, same page | ₹1,95,000 per piece |
That page is a marketplace listing by one dealer, so the prices are that seller's asking prices on that date. For treadmills there is a second source. Jerai Fitness's commercial vs home treadmill guide gives its own bands, and it names the gym type each band suits (checked 2 Nov 2026):
| Treadmill tier (Jerai Fitness) | Band it publishes, checked 2 Nov 2026 |
|---|---|
| Entry-level commercial, small gyms and boutique studios | ₹1,50,000 to ₹2,50,000 |
| Mid-range, gym chains and corporate fitness rooms | ₹2,50,000 to ₹3,50,000 |
| Premium, hotels, high-volume gyms and sports facilities | ₹3,50,000 to ₹5,00,000+ |
Notice that the two sources differ for the same kind of machine. That is normal. Get at least three written quotes for every large item, and ask each vendor what the price includes.
#Your equipment sheet
List every machine and rack. The total goes into the worksheet above.
| Item | Quantity | Quoted unit price | Quantity x price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Treadmills | ____ | ____ | ____ |
| Bikes and rowers | ____ | ____ | ____ |
| Racks and benches | ____ | ____ | ____ |
| Plates, barbells, dumbbells | ____ | ____ | ____ |
| Selectorised machines | ____ | ____ | ____ |
| Small items (mats, bands, mirrors, racks for storage) | ____ | ____ | ____ |
| Equipment total | ____ |
#Licences and paperwork
I will not give you a fee for these, because they depend on your state and municipality. Ask your local office, and fill the formula with what they quote.
- Shop and establishment registration or trade licence from your municipal body
- Fire safety clearance, if your building and area require it
- Music licence if you play recorded music in the gym
- Business insurance and member-injury cover
- GST registration, if your turnover needs it. See GST on gym membership before you set your fees.
Ask a local chartered accountant or your landlord which of these apply to your building. The list is a checklist of questions, not legal advice.
#The software line
Software is small next to equipment, but it is the only cost that repeats every month and every branch. Decide it before you open, because member data entered in the first week is hard to move later.
The line has four parts: set-up or onboarding fee, yearly or monthly plan, per-branch charge, and the cut taken from member payments. Write each one down as a quote from the vendor's page and note the date. Our buyer's guide to gym management software lists the questions to ask, and the gym software cost page shows how to compare plans. For fees you set yourself, see gym membership pricing in India.
Leave this cell blank until you have a written quote. Do not copy a number from a blog, including this one.
#Working capital: the runway rule
Working capital is the money that keeps the doors open while members are still joining. Use months of fixed cost, not a percentage of the total.
- Add up your fixed monthly costs: rent, salaries, power, software, loan EMI, insurance, cleaning, minimum marketing.
- Choose the number of months you can pay those with zero new members.
- Working capital = fixed monthly cost x those months.
Set the months at least as long as your lease lock-in, so a slow start does not force you to shut inside the lock-in and still owe rent. Then ask what happens if member numbers reach half of your plan. If the answer is "we close", add months.
| Item | Formula | Your number |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed monthly cost | rent + salaries + power + software + EMI + other | ____ |
| Runway months | your choice, not less than the lock-in | ____ |
| Working capital | fixed monthly cost x runway months | ____ |
| Break-even members | fixed monthly cost / average fee collected per member per month | ____ |
#Where Helmr fits
Helmr, gym management software for India, is in early access. It plans to take 0% of member payments, with the money going to your own payment account, and to publish its price per business plus a per-branch add-on before launch. If you want that in your software line as a written quote when it opens, message us on WhatsApp. If you are planning the business itself, how to start a gym in India covers the steps around these numbers.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to open a gym in India?
It depends on your city, your lease and your equipment list, so there is no honest single figure. Fill the worksheet with your own quotes: deposit, fit-out, equipment, licences, software, pre-launch staff and marketing, and working capital. The total is your number.
Which cost line is the biggest?
For most gyms it is rent plus deposit, fit-out or equipment, depending on the site and the machines you choose. Commercial treadmills alone are published at hundreds of thousands of rupees each by some vendors, as shown above, so the cardio list needs care.
How many months of working capital do I need?
Choose the months by your lease lock-in and your break-even. The rule: fixed monthly cost times the months you can survive with no new members. Not less than the lock-in is a safe floor.
Should I buy new or used equipment?
Get written quotes for both and compare warranty, service and delivery. A cheap price with no service support can cost more later. Ask each vendor what is included before you compare totals.
