The eSSL X990 in a gym: specs, price and practical lessons

In short

The eSSL X990 is an optical fingerprint attendance and access-control terminal that eSSL lists for gyms and clubs. It holds 10,000 fingerprints and connects by network cable or USB. This post reads eSSL's page for what matters to a gym, gives a marketplace price, and adds what daily use at a gym front desk teaches.

#What eSSL's page says

From eSSL's X990 page, checked 2 Nov 2026:

The page quotes a false rejection rate of 1% or less and identification in under 0.5 seconds. Those are the maker's figures, not a test at your door. Price: not published by eSSL.

#What it costs

One IndiaMART seller listed the X990 at ₹15,580 per piece, excluding all taxes, on the marketplace page, checked 2 Nov 2026. The same seller also listed a separate standalone X990 model at a different price, so check which variant you are quoted. Other dealers will quote differently. Ask for the device, GST, installation and software licence on separate lines.

#What the specs mean at a gym door

  • 10,000 fingerprints is more than most single gyms need. Count active members, staff and a year of churn, not total joins.
  • Relay and Wiegand mean the device can drive a door lock or a turnstile. See how that works in the gym biometric attendance guide.
  • Push data and TCP/IP are the two ways to reach software: software on a PC pulling, or the device pushing to a server.
  • Optical sensor. Wet, oily or worn fingers can read badly on optical sensors. Test with your sweatiest members.
  • Operating range of 0 to 45 degrees C. Fine for a gym, but keep it out of direct sun and away from a doorway with spray or steam.

#What I have learned from running one

The studio I run in Hyderabad uses an ESSL X990, and these lessons come from using it day to day. They are general, not specific to one brand.

  1. A reader can be busy with a punch while you enrol. If an enrolment fails at the device with no clear reason, wait until nobody is scanning and try again. Enrol new members when the floor is quiet.
  2. Keep the reserved master user. The device has an administrator user. Never delete it, or you may lock yourself out of the menu.
  3. Give each member a stable user ID. Write it on the joining form and never reuse it. A changed ID breaks the link to old punches.
  4. Enrol two fingers. One for the usual hand, one backup.
  5. Note the device IP and admin password off the device, and give the device a fixed address on your network so it does not move.
  6. Export the log on a schedule. Do not leave 100,000 punches only on the device.

#Other things to check before you buy

  • The India-variant model, and the distributor's warranty.
  • Whether your software reads the X990 by pull, push or the SDK.
  • A demo unit for a week, tested at peak hour.
  • Whether a 2.8-inch or 3-inch screen is on the unit quoted, since one listing showed both.

Our list of seven machines puts the X990 next to other devices, eSSL vs ZKTeco compares the two brands, and the software that usually ships with it is covered in eTimeTrackLite for gyms. If you plan to change software later, read the switching guide first.

#Where Helmr fits

Helmr, gym management software for India, is being built to connect ESSL and ZKTeco devices through a bridge. Templates stay on the device, QR check-in is always an alternative, and Helmr is in early access. If you would like to be among the first to use it, message us on WhatsApp.
