Fingerprint, face or QR for gym check-in: how to choose

In short

Fingerprint, face or QR check-in are the three ways a member can prove they are at your gym. Each fails in a different place: wet hands, poor light, or a flat phone. This post compares them for an Indian gym and reads two face machines from their makers' pages.

No option wins everywhere. Many gyms run one main method and keep a second as backup.

#Fingerprint

Fingerprint terminals are the most common in Indian gyms. They hold the most members per device. The sensor is shared, so hygiene is a fair worry, and wet, oily or worn fingers can read badly on optical sensors. Enrol two fingers and keep a towel at the door. More on this in the gym biometric attendance guide.

#Face

Face terminals avoid the wet-hand problem and keep the queue moving, because nobody touches anything. They need decent, even light at the door, and the pages below show smaller face capacity than fingerprint capacity.

The eFace990 page lists faces at "6000(1:N)" standard and "3000(1:N)" in the optional column, which reads oddly, so ask the dealer which figure ships on your unit. If you search for an "essl face attendance machine", this is the device eSSL's page describes. Neither page states a camera specification or lighting needs, so the only real test is your own door at 6 am and 7 pm.

Face recognition, like fingerprint, is biometric data. Keep the templates on the device and tell members what you store.

#QR

A QR code check-in has no sensor, no shared surface and no template. The member shows a code on their phone, or scans a code at the door. It costs far less to start and works for members with wet hands. It depends on the phone: a flat battery, a cracked screen or no signal can stop a member at the door.

Write a fallback for each. A staff override at the desk and a paper sign-in sheet cover most days.

#A practical way to decide

  1. List your busiest 30 minutes and count how many members arrive.
  2. Visit your door at that hour and note the light and the wet hands.
  3. If you want a lock on the door, choose a device with a relay or Wiegand output and book an installer.
  4. Pick one main method and one backup, never only one.
  5. Run a trial week before you buy in bulk.

Prices vary by dealer. Ask for a quote that separates the device, GST, installation and software.

#Where Helmr fits

Helmr, gym management software for India, is being built to connect ESSL and ZKTeco devices through a bridge, with fingerprint and face templates staying on the device. QR kiosk check-in is planned as the alternative that is always available. Helmr is in early access. If you would like to be among the first to use it, message us on WhatsApp.

Frequently asked questions

Is face recognition better than fingerprint for a gym?

It avoids the wet-hand and shared-surface problems, but needs good light and holds fewer members on the models read here. Test both at peak hour.

How many faces can a face attendance machine hold?

The eSSL eFace990 page lists 6,000 faces (1:N) standard and the ZKTeco MB360 India page lists 1,500. Both checked 2 Nov 2026.

Does QR check-in store biometric data?

No. A QR code is not a body measurement, so there is no template to store. The system only needs to record who scanned and when.

What if a member's finger or face will not read?

Offer a backup: a second enrolled finger, a card, a PIN or a QR code, and a quick staff override at the desk.
